Bradley Manning, the US soldier suspected of being behind the largest leak of state secrets in history, has entered his ninth month in military detention and continues to be held in maximum security conditions that critics claim are in violation of his human rights.

Manning spends 23 hours of every day in his windowless 6.7 square metre cell, which contains nothing but a bed and blanket, sink and toilet. He is allowed no personal objects other than one book or magazine at a time and is prevented from taking any exercise other than in the one hour a day allocated to it, when he is taken to an empty room and allowed to walk around it in a figure of eight.

He also remains on what is known as "prevention of injury" or POI watch which means guards check him every five minutes and wake him at night if he is not fully visible. For two days last month, against the advice of prison psychiatrists, he was placed on full suicide watch, which involved him being stripped to his underwear and having his glasses confiscated unless reading or watching television.

On the rare occasions he has visitors, he has to be shackled by hand and foot and be accompanied by two guards at all times.

Manning was arrested in Iraq where he was working as an intelligence analyst at the Operating Base Hammer. He is alleged to have been the source of several WikiLeaks releases, including the massive trove of US diplomatic cables last November.

So far, however, he has only been charged with illegally obtaining more than 150,000 cables and transferring them to an unnamed "unauthorised person".

Since his arrest on 29 May last year, lawyers and campaign groups have protested against his treatment at the hands of his military jailers, initially in Kuwait and then, from July, at the brig at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. Amnesty International has called on the British government to intervene in his treatment on the grounds that his Welsh mother makes him a UK citizen. It called his regime "unnecessarily harsh and punitive", pointing out that he has no record of suicidal or violent behaviour in custody.

Manning's lawyer, David Coombs, has lodged a complaint that depicts his treatment as abuse and demands that his status is downgraded from maximum security to medium custody.

One of the few people to have been allowed to visit Manning in Quantico, David House, has witnessed the soldier's deterioration over the past few months. He told the Guardian recently: "Each time I go there seems to have been a remarkable decline. That's physical too. When I first saw him he was bright-eyed and strong like he was in early photographs, but now he looks weak, he has huge bags under his eyes and his muscles have turned to fat. It's hard watching someone over the months sicken like that."

In his most recent visit, House tweeted that Manning was in a "shocked state" as a result of his confinement, "but his mood and mind soared when I mentioned the democratic uprisings in Egypt".

Further detail of the visit was given by the blogger Jane Hamsher, who reported that according to House the prisoner was starting to show signs of prolonged isolation. He was slow to respond and seemed emotionally withdrawn.

Manning's lawyer is now hoping that a change of leadership at the top of the brig section of the marine base will bring a rethink of his treatment, and a shift to a more lenient regime. His military trial is not anticipated until May at the earliest.

US President Barack Obama

Members of the US Senate

Members of the US House of Representatives

US secretary of defence Leon Panetta

US secretary of the army John McHugh

US army chief of staff Raymond T Odierno

As members of the European parliament, who were elected to represent our constituents throughout Europe, we are writing to express our concerns about alleged human rights violations against Bradley Manning, a young soldier who has been accused of releasing classified information pertaining to possible US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are concerned that the US army has charged Bradley Manning with "aiding the enemy," a capital offence that is punishable by death. We have questions about why Mr Manning has been imprisoned for 17 months without yet having had his day in court. We are troubled by reports that Mr Manning has been subjected to prolonged solitary confinement and other abusive treatment tantamount to torture. And we are disappointed that the US government has denied the request of the United Nations special rapporteur on torture to meet privately with Mr Manning in order to conduct an investigation of his treatment by US military authorities.

We call upon the United States government to allow Juan Méndez, the United Nations special rapporteur on torture, to conduct a private meeting with Bradley Manning, the accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower. Mr Méndez has made repeated requests to American officials to meet privately with Mr Manning in response to evidence that he was subjected to abusive confinement conditions while he was detained at a facility in Quantico, Virginia. Mr Manning was held in solitary confinement for 23 hours per day during the eight months he was incarcerated at that location. It appears that he was at times forced to sleep and stand at attention without any clothing. His legal counsel has documented additional incidents which indicate the possibility of other rights violations.

Hundreds of US legal scholars have signed an open letter to the Obama administration, arguing that the conditions of confinement endured by Mr Manning at Quantico may have amounted to torture. Following worldwide calls for an end to the abusive treatment, Manning was moved to a facility in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where his conditions are said to have improved. The US military conducted an internal investigation into the allegations of mistreatment at Quantico. The preliminary results of this investigation found that Mr Manning was improperly placed on "prevention of injury" status, against the recommendations of qualified medical personnel. However, these findings were ultimately overturned by a military prison official who was implicated by the report. Therefore, the US military's internal investigation has been compromised by clear conflicts of interest. This so-called "prevention of injury" status was the justification for a number of extraordinary measures, such as denying Mr Manning comfortable bedding and not allowing him to exercise.

By preventing UN officials from carrying out their duties, the United States government risks undermining support for the work of the United Nations elsewhere, particularly its mandate to investigate allegations of torture and human rights abuses. In order to uphold the rights guaranteed to Bradley Manning under international human rights law and the US constitution, it is imperative that the United Nations special rapporteur be allowed to properly investigate evidence of rights abuses. PFC Manning has a right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment. People accused of crimes must not be subjected to any form of punishment before being brought to trial.

Finally, we in the European Union are totally opposed to the death penalty. And we certainly do not understand why an alleged whistleblower is being threatened with the death penalty, or the possibility of life in prison. We also question whether Bradley Manning's right to due process has been upheld, as he has now spent over 17 months in pre-trial confinement.

Furthermore, Bradley Manning should not be forced to waive his right against self-incrimination in order to speak with anyone who seeks to investigate evidence of abuse in their official capacity.

Consistent with these internationally recognised standards, as well as the rules governing his mandate, United Nations special rapporteur on torture Juan Méndez must be allowed to conduct an unmonitored meeting with Bradley Manning, without any further delay.

Charlie Chaplin final speech in The Great Dictator

Charlie Chaplin Text Great Dictator -- Final Speech -- Inspired by Krishnamurti - Rezamusic - Reza Ganjavi

Final Speech of "The Great Dictator" by Charlie Chaplin - Compiled by Reza Ganjavi Written and delivered by Sir Charles Chaplin General Schulz: Speak - it is our only hope. The Jewish Barber (Charlie Chaplin): I'm sorry but I don't want to be an emperor. That's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible; Jew, Gentile, black men, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each others' happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls; has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge as made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say "Do not despair." The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder! Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men---machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have a love of humanity in your hearts! You don't hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it’s written “the kingdom of God is within man”, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power. Let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill their promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfill that promise! Let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

I thought this was cool read the end of the message. Very cool.

Anonymous • OK, this may be a very silly question but is there any way at all someone can contribute money to Anonymous? I mean, we probably can’t mail checks to an individual, who would no longer be anonymous… odds are electronic payment that ties an email to a bank account won’t work… but isn’t there maybe a bank somewhere in the world in a country somewhere in the world where the privacy of the customer is protected in some way?

Save the Internet

Avaaz - Save the Internet

15 November 2011
Right now, the US Congress is debating a law that would give them the power to censor the world's internet -- creating a blacklist that could target YouTube, WikiLeaks and even groups like Avaaz!

Under the new law, the US could force internet providers to block any website on suspicion of violating copyright or trademark legislation, or even failing to sufficiently police their users' activities. And, because so much of the internet's hosts and hardware are located in the US, their blacklist would clamp down on the free web for all of us.

The vote could be in days but we can help stop this -- champions in Congress want to preserve free speech and tell us that an international outcry would strengthen their hand. Let’s urgently raise our voices from every corner of the world and build an unprecedented global petition calling on US decision makers to reject the bill and stop internet censorship. Sign the petition and then forward as widely as possible - our message will be delivered directly to key members of the US Congress ahead of the crucial vote.

Oh look do you see what I see. Only 4 huge main banks are still around which most of the other had been around back in the 90's. My question for you is what as the Government done to stop this from going on. I mean they wanted to stop Microsoft years ago plus a few others from being a monopoly why is it the banks have been allowed to do this at all. I know they still have four but I think that about 39 or so is far better. Who is the one to blame for this in are Government. I think we need to fig it out and get them out of office fast and get someone in office that will put a end to it fast.
